REPLY to medpoint comment after my review:
Thank you for your response. I appreciate that MedPoint follows what it believes are evidence-based guidelines. However, I would like to clarify that my review accurately reflects my experience.
During my consultation, the doctor explicitly explained that he was not prescribing antibiotics because of what he described as the Dutch philosophy or Dutch approach to treating these types of infections. That was the explanation given to me at the time, and it was the basis for the treatment decision as it was presented to me.
My disappointment was not simply that I did not receive antibiotics. I understand that antibiotics are not appropriate for every sore throat and should only be prescribed when medically indicated. My concern was that no throat swab, rapid strep test, or other diagnostic testing was offered to determine whether my infection was bacterial or viral before deciding on the treatment plan. Given that I had a severe sore throat with white plaques on my tonsils while traveling abroad, I expected a more thorough evaluation or at least a discussion of available diagnostic options.
I also feel your response mischaracterizes my comment regarding the additional fee. My review did not state that I was charged solely for written information. Rather, I explained that I was offered written aftercare instructions for an additional fee, which I declined because the information described appeared to be general symptom-management advice.
As I mentioned in my original review, I sought a second opinion elsewhere on the island. I felt that my concerns were taken more seriously there, which reinforced my view that seeking another opinion was the right decision for me.
My review reflects my personal experience as a patient and is intended to help others make informed decisions. I respect that healthcare systems and clinical approaches differ, but I also believe patients deserve an individualized assessment, appropriate diagnostic consideration, and a clear discussion of the reasoning behind their care.
REVIEW:
I had a very disappointing experience. I was visiting Curaçao from the United States for a week and developed a severe sore throat with white plaques on my tonsils. During the consultation, the doctor explained what he described as the Dutch approach to treating these kinds of infections, emphasizing that antibiotics were generally not recommended and that the body's immune system should fight the infection on its own.
He also offered to send me written instructions on how to manage my symptoms for an additional $80. I politely declined, as this type of general self-care information is widely available online at no cost.
Since I was concerned about my condition and wanted a different medical opinion, I chose to seek care from another doctor on the island instead of pursuing further treatment with the physician from MedPoint Curacao.
In my opinion, the consultation was not helpful and did not address my concerns. I left feeling frustrated and disappointed with the experience. If you're looking for a doctor who is more willing to discuss different treatment options based on your individual situation, you may want to consider seeking a second opinion.
I've rarely seen anything like it in other countries! I contacted her in the morning and had an appointment early in the afternoon with no waiting at all! The pediatrician was very gentle with my son. Thank you!
We were able to make an appointment very quickly and were seen on time. The doctor also took her time during the consultation. Everything was clearly explained.
